My uncle was a “foot soldier” in WW2. All the time, he was in fighting in the war, his mother received post cards from Fort Dix. Little did he know that you can’t fool a mother.

One day, on the front page of the Daily News appeared a picture of a soldier and the article read:
          “Ankle Express to Bastogne
Yank Infantryman crawls under barbed wire fence as reinforcements move up across snow covered countryside toward Bastogne…”

There was my Uncle Louie on his knees crawling under the barb wire. His eyes were wide open. He was carrying his rifle with bayonet attached. As I look at the picture, I understand why I am in the military.

For when I look into the soldier’s eyes, I see my Uncle Louie.

I now know the answer to the question - why am I a military physician?

I am here for the soldier – Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. These are our brave individuals (men and women) who are putting their lives on the line. They are separated from their families. They are our defenders of freedom.

This book is dedicated to all the women and men of our Armed Forces, past and present, who serve our country and to their families.
